French for Meetings: 15 Phrases You’ll Actually Use

Struggling to speak up in French meetings?

You're not alone. Whether you're working in France, a francophone team, or a bilingual company, business French meetings can feel overwhelming, even when your French is decent. The good news: you don't need perfect grammar. You need the right French phrases for meetings — ones you can actually reach for in real time, without freezing.

This guide gives you 15 essential expressions, organized by situation, so you can start speaking, reacting, and participating, starting at your very next meeting.

1. To start speaking (without panicking)

Sometimes the hardest part… is just starting.

Use:

  • ✔️ Alors…✔️ Du coup… ✔️ Bon… ✔️Hum ….

These give you 2 seconds to think, no one questions it and gives you a little “je ne sais quoi”.

2. To give your opinion

Keep it simple.

  • ✔️ Je pense que…

  • ✔️ À mon avis…

  • ✔️ Je trouve que…

Example:

Je pense que c’est une bonne idée.
À mon avis, c’est trop compliqué.

Clear. Effective. No stress.

3. To agree (without sounding robotic)

Please… stop saying only “oui” I know you want to say more and be more precise.

Upgrade:

  • ✔️ Oui, je suis d’accord

  • ✔️ Exactement

  • ✔️ Je suis complètement d’accord

  • ✔️ C’est une bonne proposition

4. To disagree (politely, we’re still in a meeting)

You don’t need to be aggressive.

Try:

  • ✔️ Je ne suis pas totalement d’accord

  • ✔️ Je vois ce que tu veux dire, mais…

Professional. Calm. You’re surviving an extra minute.

5. To ask a question

Because yes… you’re allowed to not understand everything!

  • ✔️ Tu peux préciser ?

  • ✔️ Tu peux expliquer ?

  • ✔️ Qu’est-ce que tu veux dire ?

  • ✔️ Si j’ai bien compris tu veux ….

6. To buy time (very important skill)

Your brain needs a moment? Take it. There’s nothing wrong about needing extra time.

  • ✔️ Bonne question…

  • ✔️ Je réfléchis…

  • ✔️ Attends…

No panic. Just strategy.

7. To interrupt (without starting a war)

Meetings = interruptions. But please, do it nicely:

  • ✔️ Excuse-moi, J’ai une question.

8. To bring an idea

You have something to say. Good, let’s make it happen.

  • ✔️ On pourrait…

  • ✔️ On peut essayer de…

  • ✔️ Et si on…

9. To be honest (without panicking)

Sometimes you’re not sure and it’s good to make it plain.

Say :

  • ✔️ Je ne suis pas sûr

  • ✔️ Je dois vérifier

  • ✔️ Je n’ai pas l’info

And that’s completely fine.

10. To summarize

Want to sound instantly more professional? Do this:

  • ✔️ Donc…

  • ✔️ En résumé…

  • ✔️ Si je comprends bien…

Boom! Leadership energy.

11. To react naturally

Instead of staying silent:

  • ✔️ Ah oui, d’accord

  • ✔️ Ok, je vois

  • ✔️ Ah intéressant

Small reactions = big difference.

12. To talk about problems

Because there are always problems and there’s nothing wrong about that.

  • ✔️ Il y a un problème avec…

  • ✔️ Ça ne marche pas

  • ✔️ On a une difficulté

13. To suggest a solution

Don’t just point out problems. You have solutions in your pocket? Go for it!

14. To end your point

So you don’t just… fade away mid-sentence.

  • ✔️ Voilà

  • ✔️ C’est tout

  • ✔️ C’est ce que je pense

Clean ending. We like it.

15. To survive the meeting

This one is important.

  • ✔️ Oui c’est clair

  • ✔️ Ça marche

  • ✔️ Parfait

Use wisely. Not every 10 seconds but for instance if someone asks you to complete a task, these are useful.

So… what actually matters?

Not perfect grammar and complex vocabulary but speaking, reacting, participating.

You don’t need 1,000 words.

You need the right 15 phrases, updated with your own context used at the right moment.

The real difference

Someone who says: “Je pense que c’est une bonne idée” is already in the conversation even if it’s simple. Meanwhile someone who says nothing is invisible.
